Interview with Grainne McGinley

Today is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. We have interviewed our Director, Grainne McGinley to understand more about women in leadership roles.

When you began your career in the finance services, did you ever imagine that you would have a leadership role in this profession?

Yes, I did but when I started there were significantly less women in leadership roles so it took time.

Who inspired you to be a leader and why?

My Father, who never shied away from strong opinions but knowing when to stay silent at the right time and was respected by his peers for it.

What’s the best and worst part of being a leader?

Watching people become the best version of themselves when you mentor them. The worst part is simply not having enough time!

What do you think makes a good leader?

Being decisive, supportive and always give credit when due!

How does Valla celebrate women’s equality in the workplace?

Women simply are equal in our workplace, career advancement is not given to just tick a diversity box – it is earned though hard work and going the extra mile regardless of your gender.

What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders and to young women entering the financial services?

Continually educate yourself, immerse yourself in as many cultural experiences as you can and read books (or preferred electronic device!).
