PROTECT WHAT IS PRECIOUS
VALLA were thrilled to be a sponsor of Go Wild Gorillas for Durrell. Artists, businesses, schools and local groups worked together on this major community project to celebrate Durrells 60th anniversary. Forty life-sized gorilla sculptures formed a public art trail that took locals and visitors on a trail of discovery around the island. Lorenzo raised a fantastic £16,000 at the Go Wild Gorillas Auction after the trail ended.
THE VALLA GORILLA
MEET LORENZO
The inspiration for Valla’s Gorilla ‘Lorenzo’ Protect What is Precious theme came from research that Alastair undertook at university on deforestation. As he already understood the subject well, his design highlighted the main issues, such as deforestation and poaching, with mixed mythical imagery creating a strange space for these subjects to float around in.
Valla worked with artist Alastair Knowles-Lenoir (aka Handsforfeet) who is an illustrator, printmaker and muralist currently based in London.
HEADWAY JERSEY AND VALLA’S GORILLA
MEET VALLARIE
Valla also sponsored the Headway Community Gorilla ‘Vallarie’. Vallarie was created using a variety of materials. The head has an image of the brain, and the lobes have been highlighted in various colours and materials. Often a person with a brain injury can lose or have their senses altered, including hearing, seeing, smell, touch and taste. A person’s identity can also be affected; this has been communicated through the predominant orange colour, more associated with an Orangutan.
